UMC STRUCTURE
The United Methodist Church operates with a non-centralized structure. This means that, unlike other denominations with a more hierarchical system with a central authority, the United Methodist Church shares its decision-making across different bodies. The General Conference is the primary legislative body and makes decisions on policy and practice matters. The Council of Bishops provides leadership and oversight of spiritual and administrative matters. Lastly, the Judicial Council functions as the denomination’s highest judicial body, interpreting church laws and determining the constitutionality of procedures as they relate to the Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church. This structure allows for a more distributed form of governance.

Bishop Carlo A. Rapanut
The purpose of the Desert Southwest Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church is multifaceted. It serves as a key gathering for clergy and laity members to worship, learn, and make decisions regarding the administration of the conference. It includes sessions for ordination, reports of past and ongoing work, as well as visioning for the future. The conference also addresses resolutions and petitions, and it may involve the election of new leaders and representatives for the jurisdiction and general church.
Additionally, it’s a time for connection and fellowship among members, offering opportunities for spiritual growth and sharing of ministry experiences. The conference aims to strengthen the bonds within the community, provide guidance, and align the collective efforts with the broader goals of the United Methodist Church.
